Swordsmiths are notoriously known to be difficult with the types of steel they work with, so the block of steel has to pass a thorough inspection before making it to their own workspace. Therefore, the few smiths who are using the traditional techniques in Japan and are willing to sell their swords do so for a really high price – usually upward of 5000$. Needless to say, these swords are inaccessible to most people. Only select steel blocks make it through, while smaller, impure steel is sent to make forks and small knives.
The carbon steel sword is also visually appealing. With its clean chrome finish, it’s the perfect addition to anyone’s sword collection. But that’s really just a side benefit of choosing a carbon steel sword. The real benefit is its strength and performance. Did you ever hear the term Damascus steel? It’s a very common term employed by swords enthusiasts all over the world. Usually, people even name the swords we create at Swords for Sale “Damascus” swords. So, what is Damascus steel? While originally from the region of Damascus, it isn’t exactly tied with its origins but with a process the forger uses when creating a sword’s blade. This process is called folding. Folding is done to create the beautiful “Damascus” steel pattern on the blade.
It’s a much better steel for a functional than for example, stainless steel – which is often used on decorational swords. Stainless steel is a very hard type of steel – which can become brittle and gets easily damaged under impact. It is, however, easy to maintain and care for – it can hang on the wall for a very long time. Now, some swords that are in fact “wall-hangers” are also made of High-Carbon steel. This is where we have to look beneath the surface. More precisely: under the handle wrap and its wooden core.
Stainless Steel: is it a great idea for swords? Stainless steel, often known as inox steel or inox from the French inoxydable (inoxidable), is an alloy of steel with a minimum mass percentage of 10.5% chromium. This chromium content makes it so that the blade oxidises much more slowly – meaning it will not rust. Stainless steel swords require low maintenance and also are more easily sharpened. It’s very widely used to create knives and small cutlery. If the process of oxidation is left unchecked, iron will change into a different iron oxide, or more frequently, rust. If it is exposed to moisture, even a tiny quantity of moisture in the air, the blade will start to rust. By producing a thin film on the iron that essentially blocks moisture, chromium prevents rust.
One by one, each sword is hand-forged, assembled, and reviewed by swordsmiths, blade polishers, and sword assemblers over the course of weeks. The blade is always the longest thing to make. The steel has to be selected, forged and perhaps folded (for the beautiful “Damascus” pattern), and can also be clay-tempered to create a beautiful natural hamon line.
